You must have heard the term Toll Free Numbers, and may be have dialled some of them also.
Toll Free numbers act as a service provided by companies to reach out to and look after their customers in a more effective manner.
Here, I am going to tell you about a Toll Free Number and why most of them start with 1800. Let's get straight into it.
What is a Toll Free Number?
According to Federal Communications Commission;
"Toll-free numbers are telephone numbers with distinct three-digit codes that can be dialed from landlines with no charge to the person placing the call."
Such numbers allow callers to reach businesses and/or individuals out of the area without being charged a long-distance fee for the call.
Toll-free numbers are particularly common for customer-service calling. Toll-free service has traditionally provided potential customers and others with a free and convenient way to contact businesses.
Wireless callers, however, will be charged for the airtime minutes used during a toll-free call unless they have an “unlimited calling” plan.
A Brief HISTORY.
AT&T introduced the first toll-free number, beginning with the prefix "800", in 1967.
Before this innovation, customers dialing a business had to call collect, and couldn't be patched through until the business guaranteed payment for the incoming call.
Not only was the collect-call system a financial burden, but it presented a labor hurdle as well, since human operators had to physically receive and route incoming calls.
Why do Most Toll Free Numbers start with 1800 Generally?
Actually, the answer to this question is meant by one single statement.
Most toll free numbers start with the series 1-800 because '800' is the original toll-free prefix. This is around which this whole thing revolves.

Businesses have been using 800 numbers for more than 40 years.
In 1996, as the supply of 800 numbers became exhausted, new prefixes were introduced. There are six toll free codes today: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855 and 844.
One can even compare the variation of toll free numbers to website domain names. 800 is essentially .com, 888 is .net and 866 and 877 are like .info, .biz etc. However 888 numbers are gradually becoming more popular.
