We all have been using MS Word for a long time now.
We have used MS Word for different purposes such as educational purposes, business, professional and personal uses.
While using MS Word (which is part of the official MS Office suite) you may have come across terms such as Doc and Docx .
Here, I am going to tell you more about these terms Doc and Docx.
What is Doc and Docx?
These are basically file extensions used in MS Word.
The Doc file extension has been used by MS Word for a long time now.
However the last time Doc was used as default file extension was in MS Word was in 2003.
The next update of MS Word occurred in 2007 and with that the default file extension was changed to docx.
Why the change from Doc to Docx?
The doc file format was proprietary to Microsoft.
This means that software from other types of word processing products had trouble reading Doc files, because they could not read the files.
Microsoft wanted to create a new file extension for word processing which would be an open source format.
That need for creating an open format that can be easily readable by other word processing products, resulted in the formation of Docx extension.
Now the behind the work coding was done in XML (eXtensible Markup Language), hence the part 'X' in the Docx type extension.
Now, that you know what Doc and Docx mean, let me tell you some differences between the two.
1. Doc files can be read in all MS Word versions, while Docx can only be read by 2007 or later versions of MS Word, unless you have installed some compatibility packs in your 2003 version.
2. Docx file size is 75% less than file size of Doc file.
3. Docx files can be converted easily to different file formats such as doc, html and others. While Doc files need to be converted in the aid of some professional software.
4. Docx file format is more powerful and versatile on features.
At the end, Docx seems to be a better output format.
